Research Officer Intern

The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) is a prominent rural development NGO that has made a lasting impact on the lives of over 62 million individuals across five continents since its inception in 1960. Our dedicated programs focus on enhancing health, education, and environmental conditions in rural communities, emphasizing sustainable and scalable solutions that empower people to uplift their lives and livelihoods. IIRR operates globally with offices in Africa, Asia, and North America.

We are inviting motivated, strategic thinkers to join us as Research Officer Interns. You will play a crucial role in supporting the creation of project proposals and knowledge management materials through focused research activities, all under the guidance of the Director of Global Operations.

This internship is unpaid but can be taken for class credit. We offer two flexible internship models:

  1. Full-time: 5 days a week (40 hours) for 3 months
  2. Part-time: 3 to 4 days a week (20 hours) for 6 months

Please note that all internship hours should be scheduled during standard New York/East Coast business hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review literature related to IIRR's core themes: Health, Education, Economic Empowerment, Food Systems, and the Environment.
  • Contribute to the formation of research questions and draft concept notes.
  • Assist in composing research reports, briefing notes, policy papers, and other necessary documents.
  • Research and identify potential partnerships with local organizations, universities, and research institutions.
  • Represent IIRR in program and coordination meetings, staff meetings, workshops, and discussions with stakeholders when appropriate.
  • Help design and manage research dissemination and follow-up activities, providing strategic advice on future program directions.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree completed in any discipline before the internship begins.
  • Highly organized, dependable, and self-motivated.
  • Approachable and responsive, especially when handling ad-hoc requests for support.
  • Creative and resourceful, with a passion for problem-solving.
  • Exceptional writing abilities with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Curious and open-minded, willing to contribute innovative ideas.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while efficiently managing multiple tasks.
  • Willingness to embrace learning experiences and incorporate feedback in a diverse, global team setting.
  • Capable of adapting to a startup culture that may require flexibility in roles.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Applications.
  • Responsive to managerial feedback, able to take direction and work independently in a remote environment.
  • Passionate about making a positive impact.
